Siesta time

Well, yet again I’ve been rubbish with this blogging malarkey. Realised I haven’t made a post in 6 months. My plan was to keep everyone up to date with my adventure, but in all honestly not much has happened. Everyone thinks you move to Spain and you lead this amazing holiday lifestyle.

Which it would be very nice if I could go to the beach every day and parties every night, but unfortunately it is just business as usual. My day still consists of running my web design company from 9-5 and then jumping into the poker grind at 7pm for 4 or 5 nights a week. I still have to go out and do my food shopping, go into town to the bank and do all the things you have to do back in the UK, only difference is it is hotter here (and the service is poorer… believe it or not).

I left off on my last blog with people coming to visit. I had an amazing couple of weeks with Jilly, Math, Cha and my parents. It was very tiring having so many visitors in such a short space of time, and spent too much on going out and eating, but it was amazing to show everyone my little Spanish town, I think everyone had a good time.

After everyone left and I recovered it started to turn to winter… which means everyone leaves this little town. I thought Blackpool was bad for seasonal traffic, but this is definitely more extreme. In summer it’s bustling with holiday makers, people partying, fiesta’s going on every week. In the winter you can sometimes walk the main streets at weekends and not see a single person. Most of the restaurants are closed and the only nightclub in town also closes its doors.

To be honest, it’s now coming to the end of February and I’m a little bored… I’m starting to miss the big city hustle and bustle. You don’t appreciate how good it is to get a McDonalds at 3am or even to catch a local bus. Whereas Moraira is one of the most beautiful little places I have been, I don’t think it is really for my age group long term and maybe it will be a place I would like to come to retire.

This year my plan is to move nearer a big city (Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona), which it will be nearer to the airports (reducing costs to come travel for poker more again) and to the casino (need to definitely polish up my live game).

Mid last year, poker wasn’t going so well. I got into a hole with Bankroll Supply (which hasn’t really happened in the last 4 years of playing with them). It was a time also that I really was depending on the money which really increases the pressure on trying to make a profit every month. I think I have been quite lucky as I have played poker over 10 years and it has been the first time I have been in this situation. Mainly because I have always refused to ever make poker my sole income. Although I’m not the most organised person with my finances, I know I couldn’t deal with the full time pressure of not having a more secure income to pay my rent, bills and food.

Psychologically the downswing really got in my head. I don’t know about a lot of you poker players out there that are at least semi-dependant on a poker income, but sometimes I have a dream that one day I might wake up and have literally completely forget everything I know about the game and not be able to win any more. Well this downswing I actually convinced myself that had happened. It was like I had forgotten even my A-game and just couldn’t find my way to a final table no matter what I did.

Overall I think it could have been a lot worse, I definitely could have lost more than I did. I was a good girl and dropped stakes, went to the softer games I know I can beat and took more time away from playing as I started to hate it. I always promised myself if I didn’t win at the game I wouldn’t bother playing any more…. What’s the point!

I would never claim to be a particularly good poker player, however one thing I know is that my bankroll management and discipline has made me through over 10 years of winning, and I do believe that those qualities are if not more important than an actual knowledge of how to play.

At the end of the day we all mainly play poker for one thing (apart from those weirdoes that actually enjoy it) we play to be able to make a long term profit from the game. I have seen it hundreds of times in poker, these so called hot shots binking a tidy sum that could make life a lot easier for a while, to then be picking up chips off the floor for their dinner the following week as they start to think they are indestructible in the higher stakes.

I will agree though, one downside to my admittedly slightly over-disciplined-ness, is that I have probably missed out on some bigger shots and banked my profit rather than played higher buyins, taken deals and chops instead of going for the win.

However looking back at my main aim, to make a long term profit, the decisions and restrictions I have placed on myself have achieved that goal.

I managed to turn it back around this year and have got back off to a great start. I managed to win a satellite for a live event but decided to cash it in due to travel expenses. That generally goes against one of my rules; I always believe if you win a seat you should play…. You never know if that could be your big bink.

I’m on the fence about going to Vegas this year; I want to focus on moving house around that time so might be too much hassle. I’ve started to save money just in case. I miss Vegas sooooooo much <3

I’ve also forgot to mention my trip back to the UK (stupid poker rant) over Xmas and New Year. It was really crazy to go back; it felt like a different life. I think I must have got used to the very chilled out and relaxed atmosphere in Spain. I look back now and wondered how I managed doing all that I do as well as the social life I had, going out with friends, going to Dusk Till Dawn.

I do miss things a lot back home and wish I could bring all my friends and some of my old lifestyle here in the nice weather.

I got to hang out at Cha’s which always makes it feel like Xmas. Blackpool is always a fun time, and I have some of the funniest amazing best friends.

I then rented a car and drove to Nottingham to see all that crew, played a tournament in Dusk Till Dawn… I think that was the strangest to go back to. Got to catch up with Alex (Otter) and Rachel, Danny and Poppy among others.

Then it was on to London for New Year with Jilly, thankfully we had a nice quiet time as Jilly had to work a lot. I was exhausted by this point. Then drive back to Blackpool to get the flight back.

I got back on Claudio’s birthday, so went for some cake with the family. I still haven’t learned to speak to them all in Spanish yet so I just sit and smile a lot. (Scary crazy English girl alert)

Things are good at the moment and feeling really happy, looking forward to this year and where it is going to take me….let’s see in the next blog….

Spanish Summer

Well I haven’t posted in a while, been too much going on this year and a lot has happened.

My situation has changed slightly; I now live in a little villa on my own which is nice and peaceful. We had to move out of our last villa as the landlady sold the house at which point Charlie left Spain back to the UK.

Everything went a little crazy with my life, which seems to always be the case. I fell in love (which is NOT like me) and hopefully fall out of love soon and picked up a broken heart along the way. I’m sure some of you are aware it is not a fun thing to have to go through. But I guess it is something that everyone should have happen at least once in their life, as it’s quite an important experience to deal with and learn from.

This year I see more than ever that when people cause problems and bring upset and pain to your life, they are better forgotten and quickly expelled of. I have spent too long reflecting on things rather than just living life and creating better moments and memories with people that deserve to share them with you.

I have needed my friends more than ever, but even though they are far away they are still always there for me when needed and I am very thankful for some of the special people I have met along my travels.

So warning to fellow female friends planning on coming to Spain, don’t fall for the fake Spanish charm!

I have met a great friend here that has helped me a lot this summer. Claudio, a 24 yr old Argentinian boy, he is the most beautiful boy I have ever seen and a more beautiful heart to go with it. I would marry this boy he was 10 years older (or I was 10 years younger)

I got another year older a few weeks ago, which is always depressing, however he made my birthday very special. I got cake, balloons, bubbles, presents, ice cream and he bought me a swimming pool. What more could I want!!!!

We also spent the day kayaking just off our local beach. We packed a picnic and stopped at the nearby caves for a spot of dinner.

There is a lot going on this summer, fiestas every week in the surrounding towns. The Spanish have some crazy traditions which I have been getting involved in. It’s quite an eye opener the community spirit. Everyone helps in various ways to raise money for their town’s celebrations. And boy do they know how to party!!! They spend fortunes on just having a good time… my kind of place.

There is always bands and music on at nights, I have been to see the bull fights (although not really a fight, they just tease the bulls a little… it’s only the people that get hurt), I have been to the chicken runs, and the fireworks and the shows they put on with the magnificent costumes, the street parties with free cake. You can always find something going on.

One thing now that I’m really starting to get frustrated with is learning the language. There are various things that I keep having to get other people to do for me, which being an independent person, I like to do for myself.

I have been doing lessons every single day for at least an hour but still don’t feel much improvement. The mistake I made was just slowly plodding through the Rosetta Stone software, which in itself is fantastic, however is a very slow process and the main thing I was missing was fast conversational listening. So I have downloaded some ones to listen to when I’m playing poker. Synergy Spanish is a very good one.

The biggest hindrance is the fact I’m still too scared to get stuck into speaking it. The problems are always:

  • They don’t understand what you say
  • They understand and answer back too fast which I can’t understand
  • You have said it so bad they answer you back in English

I also still haven’t got Spanish TV sorted, which then I can leave on in the background and just listen to the flow of the language and the pronunciation.

Once I learn Spanish my social circles will also expand, as the English people here, I’m sure the UK government have expedited them overseas for various reasons. I would rather talk to my plant.

I’m starting to miss the poker scene a little back in the UK. Initially I was glad to be away from it, think I needed a break from that environment. It can be unhealthy being exposed for extended periods of time.

I’ve only been to the casino in Alicante once since moving to Spain. It’s an hour drive and €14 in toll roads. But I’m thinking of going next week for a €50 freezeout. See what the craic is.

Online is still going good. Will be heading to the Battle of Malta in September and now looking at the Caribbean Poker tour, preferably Punta Cana for November.

I’m starting to build my PLO8 group back up with Bankroll Supply. I have got a few good players now so hopefully that will continue to go well over the next few months.

Not sure when I’m heading back to the UK for a visit. But missing all my friends so much now as it has been so long since I have seen some of them and so much has happened.

Rachel and Danny are pregnant again, which is the best thing in the whole world. Little Poppy is just the cutest thing ever and they seem so happy.

Alex is on a mission and setting up a new business, which knowing her will probably take over the world.

Jilly and Math are hopefully coming over to see me in September as well as my parents. So got a busy year coming up and who knows what the next one will bring or where I will be.

Take care of yourselves and each other xox

No way Jose!

Well I just about survived another trip back to the UK over Xmas. I was really torn how I felt about going back, half of me wanted to stay in such an amazing chilled out place but I also missed all my friends and looked forward to a good catch up.

Although hectic, I enjoyed it and just about got to see everyone despite the painful use of public transport. I did borrow my Mum’s car for a while but she wouldn’t allow me to leave the outskirts of Blackpool. FML!!!!

I got to play a poker tournament at DTD which felt slightly weird to be back, I’m already getting used to Spanish life.

I wasn’t back in Spain long when my friend Alex (Otter) flew over for a few days to visit. We had a good time eating good food and catching up, we also had a Karaoke night which included the spice girls…that I shall say no more about.

Charlie came back and got caught up with all the Spanish drama and new people I had met since she had been away working.

Jade, Jack, Joe, Me, Adam, Ben, Lelia

She is only back for 2 weeks then she goes away for a month on poker dealing jobs *sad face*She has well turned into my wife, we are quite compatible housemates.

When she returns she may be bringing some of her American dealer friends back to stay… no complaints here!!! Mmmm Americans….

One of the things that attracted me to move to another Country was one of my slight infatuations with understanding people and their behaviour. There is such a wide range of different nationalities living round this area and I find it fascinating listening to their life stories and upbringing and mapping those things to aspects of their personality or beliefs.

Everyone round here seems to be lost souls, either they have nothing and they are trying to find something better or they are running away to escape something, however each one has an interesting story to tell. I definitely feel a purpose to help people find their way back on track, without being my usual too over generous, get fucked in the ass, mug self.

I’m also intrigued on the outcome of my other Psychology/Sociology experiment to see how different boys are compared to the typical English wankers.

I can literally categorise any guy into one of 4 categories (come on male readers, bet you can place yourself in at least one category):

  • The arrogant assholes that generally think it is OK to talk to you like shit, cocky attitudes and generally are complete players and dirty rotten cheaters
  • The momma’s boys that have always been spoon fed. Couch potatoes that expect everything done for them. No ambition, no motivation.
  • The highly intelligent, extremely witty, but socially awkward types that generally come with a bundle of insecurities and history of scars and depression.
  • The perverted, sit and home touch yourself over pictures of girls on Facebook, goddamn weirdo stalkers!!!

If you don’t fit in that list then in my experience you are most probably gay… deal with it.

So I’m interested to see if International boys can widen my categories.

The only things I have learned so far are:

  • Spanish accent is hot!!!!
  • Usually misspelling and bad grammar is a bit of a turn off, but none English boys trying to write English is kind of cute.
  • They have bigger cojones than English boys.

People here seem way more accepting of other cultures than back home. Being able to speak 3 or 4 languages as standard is something I find fascinating. I fully admit I am typical English, used to be reluctant to try the local cuisine, couldn’t speak a word of another language etc. So it’s all a very eye opening experience.

I’m learning to cook more local dishes; the food here is amazing and so cheap

Prawnies

Goats Cheese and ham parcels

I’m trying to keep up with learning Spanish; I have switched a few websites over to Spanish as the internet is the main source I use on a daily basis. So I’m constantly looking up words and learning new things. I don’t really watch TV so I always make sure I have the Spanish radio on in my car which helps with the fast flowing rhythm of the language. I reckon I can pick up about 2-3 words out of a sentence now, although it’s very different trying to speak it.

My plan for the coming months is to relax and continue to settle into Spanish life. I’m going to try and satellite into some live poker events (none UK) and try and save some money to go to Vegas this year. Hopefully if I’m in profit with bankroll Supply I can play some poker in Vegas.

All in all so far….life is good. I can’t wait for the summer here :)

The calm after the storm

Well, all I need to do is post this picture and they say a picture says a thousand words. This is the goddamn life. I can’t think of a word that expresses the tranquillity of this place.

I don’t think I could have picked a more perfect location if I searched the ends of the earth. I have absolutely fallen in love with this area and already feels like home.

Don’t get me wrong it’s not always a bed of roses like people think. “Ah MBN sat in Spain in the sun and sipping Sangria”. It’s most definitely not a holiday, it’s pretty much work as usual.

The weather has been pretty horrendous, massive winds up to 80km which kept blowing my playing cards all around the garden. I keep finding jokers under the shrubs to this day. Also pretty heavy rain, the pool nearly flooded and the plastic duck nearly got away.

To get anything done here you need an NIE/NIF number, seriously to do anything!!! Couldn’t even top up my phone credit online without it. To get this it’s a bit of a ballache, so anyone coming over I would advise to get this done before you come. There are plenty of people that will do it online for a small fee. Otherwise you need about 3 trips to Benidorm if you need to get it quick, and when I say quickly, I mean Spanish quick which is a week. Mañana MY ASS!!!

You have to go to the police station, get a form, and go get it signed and stamped by a bank for a small fee. Go back to the police station with the form and then go back after a week to get the number.

Doesn’t sound too bad, but when Spain is only alive about 2 hours a day and they seem to have a bank holiday one day a week, it can get goddamn frustrating.

So I needed this NIE number to get a car, and to get the NIE number I needed a car. Oh that’s a sticky situation. It meant I had to hire cars at €160 a week.

Finally got it all sorted and bought a little run around, it’s quite an old car but low mileage. If it lasts 6 months I’m happy. I’ve named it Tulisa (I watch too much XFactor!!!)

I have also learned a few dodgy car dealers (or flaglettes as apparently the Germans call them) round here, so please msg me if you’re looking to buy a car in this area.

Hopefully will be able to afford a cool car next year if have some nice poker wins. I thought best to start cheap until I get used to driving on the wrong side. I’m bound to have a bump or two.

Flew back to the UK to play the Genting Poker Series in Sheffield, I was really looking forward to this weekend. Had a mishap where the airport bus didn’t show up and cost me €127 in taxi fare. This is still in dispute and won’t be lying down without a fight.

The weekend was a good one, pretty unusually quiet for a poker weekend. No mad benders for a change. Even Darren Craven was drinking tea!!!!

Had some nice meals in the restaurant with Paul Jackson and the gang, had 3 steaks (not all in one sitting), he does look after me bless him. Had to share one of the steaks with Zimbler as it was so big. In fact it was probably bigger than both of us put together.

Poker was the usual. The main was standard, happy with my play. But was chipped up in the side event and blew it in absolute epic fashion. So mad at myself!!!

I knew my head wasn’t in it; this has been an exhausting rollercoaster. I’ve since come back and got my head into gear.

I was glad to get out of there to be honest; I’m starting to really see from a clear window view all the negative dark colours.

I felt such joy to land back and see the big Costa Blanca rock.

Charlie is away in Prague all this month dealing at the GSOP and WPT. It feels weird being here without her. I think we definitely a good mix of people, we both very similar in a lot of ways (apart from she is crazy) both intelligent logical people, and throw in the fact we have some severe differences in political viewpoint, it leads to some great debates. I think we are very equally matched, and about 1000 games of Gin have proved that.

She also an amazing cook, been eating really good here. I think we have an arrangement that she cooks and I clean up after.

I’m planning on heading back to Blackpool for Xmas and also a few days in Notts maybe. No way can I stay here a whole month and then through Xmas on my own. I would actually lose my marbles.

Although my social life is picking up already, I have 2 friends called George, one English and one German. Out for lunch Saturday with my Cousin and I’m off for drinks tomorrow with my neighbour’s daughter Lelia, she looks like a cool girl and she speaks Spanish, English and German. That’s seems to be bloody standard here.

I had an awkward situation closed in this old French woman’s house trying to ask her about a car for sale, we both didn’t speak much Spanish so was trying to point at things in my phrase book. FML!!!

So from now to Xmas, I’m going to get my head down, learning my Spanish, playing my poker, doing my work and just relax.

I hope the sun comes out a bit before now and Xmas so I can come back to the UK with a bit of colour. Bored of the white jokes already.

Peace out people, I hope you come to Spain soon 😀

Mi Casa Españolas

Well, I wish I had kept up with the blogging more often as now have too much to talk about and I have forgotten most of it.

So, going back to the last blog entry of trying to sort my stuff out and arranging our Amsterdam trip. Amsterdam was amazing as it always is. I love the fact there is always so many people yet always such a quiet peaceful place.

We booked in the Plaza across from the Train Station, where as it was a nice hotel, I think I would rather go back to my usual haunts. They kept locking us out the room for various annoying reasons which wouldn’t have been that much of an inconvenience, however our room was about 10 mins walk from the reception each time. Which is annoying when you’re knackered and just want to climb into bed.

So we had a chilled out time and just got all our plans sorted for Spain, flights booked, estate agents set up, accommodation sorted.

The weather was gorgeous so had a wander round in the sunshine. There are always weird and wonderful people in the Dam, including the infamous guy that dances with a flower pot on his head and Charlie took a shine to this guy and his didgeridoo.

The man and his pipe

The man and his pipe

So our flights to Spain were booked for the 10th Sept, we had only planned on staying in Alicante for 3 nights and then to move up the coast to experience different areas. It was all a little alien to me not having the whole trip planned, hadn’t even booked a return flight, however with Charlie being a crazy travelling gypsy she was used to travelling about, she even stayed in Amsterdam an extra week after I left… just because she could. I kind of envy that quality in a person.

So we got to Alicante late on the Monday and popped out for some food, not realising what a crazy adventure was yet to come.

We quite quickly realised that Alicante wasn’t the place for us, where as it was nice and was near the Casino and Airport, it was more a place you went on holiday and not to live. So we arranged some viewings further up the coast in Moraira, Benitachell and Javea. This meant it was over an hour drive each way.

We set off day one and went to hire a car, luckily they didn’t have any of the lower band cars available so were bumped up to a little white Beetle (we named her Thelma) I was so nervous as never driven on the wrong side of the road before and didn’t even really understand the way of the Spanish roads.

On exiting the car rental, I nearly ran someone over, stalled and then crashed into a bollard at the first toll booth (luckily no damage). After the first day I got the hang of it, thankfully the roads were quite chilled out and people seemed to have a lot of patience.

All in all we drove nearly 800 miles and for people who know me I DID IT ALL WITHOUT A SAT NAV!!!! Couldn’t believe how awesome we did, I tend to still get lost in Nottingham and lived here over 4 years.

So we would set off around 10am in the morning dropping in estate agents that we found trying to arrange viewings. It was very stressful as the Spanish work at half pace and then they also go for a siesta around 2pm till about 4pm. So sometimes we were still viewing houses at 7pm, drive back to the hotel, grab some food and it would be about 11pm and ready for bed.

We then booked a hotel in Calpe which was much nearer the places we wanted to view. We managed to find the place on day 4. It was NOTHING like it said on the internet. It was in fact a dingy little hostel with no parking or anything it said it had on the website.

Problem is when you get away from the main cities, English becomes sparser and with Charlie and me only being able to speak a few words it was quite difficult at times.

We managed to get an English person on the phone and told them no way were we paying what they expected to stay here and we managed to cancel the booking.

EEEEEEP now no place to stay!!!! Thankfully my half cousin lives in Benitachell. I think I have only met her a few times so was a bit nervous ringing her and asking if we could crash for the night.

She hasn’t lived here herself for too long, she moved with her husband into a beautiful villa. Unfortunately he passed away suddenly a few months back and she is now living on her own.

We ended up staying 2 nights, which saved us a bucket and she is a lovely lady, will definitely keep in touch more when I move over. I’m sure I will be able to help her out with things.

So back to bobbing round looking at Villas, sounds good but I promise it was quite stressful. It was trying to find something that was a good price, near shops and amenities and had everything we needed.

As it happened we ended up settling on one that we saw on the first day. Charlie really liked it but I wasn’t so sure. We went back to have a second look and it was 10 times better than the first time we looked (maybe as we had now seen what else we could get for different costs).

Check out our new home!!!!!

Spanish Home

Its a few minutes from Moraira centre with only 10 minute drive to Benitachell and Javea.

The bottom part of the house is self contained apartment with bedroom, living room and kitchen, perfect for my office.

Then upstairs is 2 double bedrooms, the living room is the circular bit top left, kitchen and the top right is outside dining area.

Outside, private pool and BBQ area and garage for parking.

All for €750 a month!!!!!

Now we had our house sorted we thought we could relax a little, however it didn’t quite transpire that way.

We decided to drive to Valencia and stay there for a night. We got up on the Sunday and everything was closed so decided to head to Barcelona which should have been a 4 hour drive. We did stop once for food and then hit major traffic jam which added an hour on to the journey. Once we got into Barcelona we got slightly lost forgetting how big it was.

We had basically been navigating using bits of maps we picked up (that weren’t very helpful) and saving screenshots of google maps on our laptops (as we couldn’t always find Wifi spots…and loved going round asking the Spanish for it as they pronounce it weefee). However the laptop died before we found the place we were staying in. So it ended up a 9 hour trip!!!!! Yawn!!!! And the drivers round Barcelona were less chilled out and it got a little scary.

The rest of the trip we did a bit of sightseeing and wandering round before heading back from Barcelona to East Midlands.

Spain Adventure

I’m definitely more motivated to get my stuff sorted now as I just want to get over there. It’s such a cool place and our house is gorgeous.

I think my adventure/blog is working as planned by inspiring other people to also travel and highlight that it’s not too much of a crazy idea. Since my plans about 6 of my friends have or are planning to travel/move countries.

Hopefully people will come and visit me in Spain. If anything the thing I will miss most is my friends. <3
